What is an Academy Executive Council?

An Academy Executive Council [AEC] is a small body appointed on a short-term basis to turn around a Northern Education Trust academy that is judged to be in urgent need of improvement. This could be through an academy that has either been placed in special measures or given notice to improve by Ofsted. An AEC is a smaller version of an Academy Council that is described in the Northern Education Trust Scheme of Delegation and Terms of Reference for Academy Councils. This is usually when the CEO appointed by the Trust Board considers that the Trust Boards’ responsibilities are better discharged by an Academy Executive Council [AEC], then an AEC will be established. These Councils will be as big as they are needed to be to get business done quickly and to be quorate.

The role of the AEC is to:

  • Carry the Trust vision, policies and priorities forward
  • Provide internal assurance and, in addition

The governors are expected to question, challenge and support the academy leadership and feel comfortable that they know, and are able to discuss, the performance of the academy.

The agendas and minutes of our meetings are made available to the Northern Education Trust Board, the local authority and are at the school for anyone to read via the school office. We do, however, maintain the right to confidentiality where appropriate.

If you would like to contact the Governors for any reason, please address your letter to the Chair of governors, and leave it for them at the school office. If you want to contact our Chair of Governors please send a letter to the school and we will ensure it is passed on.
